Wedding Hair Dos and Don'ts

Hooray, you're getting married!  You're excitedly researching vendors and venues, shopping for that perfect dress, shoes, and accessories, and picking a colour palette that reflects your personal taste.  But what's the one thing that will be featured in every single photo and will be with you through wardrobe changes, from "I do" till the dance floor?  Your hair, of course!  Read on for my list of wedding day "Dos and Don'ts" so you can achieve that perfect look...

Do:

-Choose a style that you love!  You'll be happiest if you can look back on your photos and fall in love with it all over again.  If you don't love it at your trial, work with your stylist to make the changes necessary so it's just right.

Don't:

-Bow to pressure from others.  Your mom, bridesmaids, or others might try to influence you, but don't give in!  It's your wedding day, and your opinion is the only one that matters.  They'll love you no matter what style you choose!

Do:

-Bring accessories (veil, fascinator, etc.) to your hair trial.  It's ideal to be able to try the style in advance with all the moving parts - fewer surprises on the wedding day equals less stress for you!

Don't:

-Leave your veil/fascinator in the package until the morning of your wedding.  Different accessories have different types of fasteners (and sometimes veils even need them to be sewn on by you!), and you want to make sure it's the right fit for your hair and chosen hairstyle.

Do:

-Wash your hair!  The old "dirty hair holds a style better" thing is a myth - oily hair falls flat and looks dull, and gunks up hot tools.  Clean, dry (and I mean totally DRY!) hair works best for heat styles.

Don't:

-Become obsessed with an unrealistic style.  If you have shoulder-length brown hair but the photo you most love on Pinterest is of waist-length blonde curls, you may have to adjust your expectations to avoid disappointment.  Try searching for hairstyles with keywords related to your hair length and colour, to get photos of styles closest to what you can achieve!

Do:

-Go crazy with Pinterest and Google!  There are a ton of inspiration photos out there, and even if you prefer a style that's a combination of two that you've found, your stylist will appreciate the concrete examples to help craft your perfect style.

Don't:

-Be afraid of hair extensions.  Clip-in extensions are relatively inexpensive, and a fantastic (and fairly quick!) way to add volume and length on the wedding day.  Make sure to find them well in advance and, if necessary, have your hair stylist dye them to match your hair colour exactly.  Bring them to your hair trial too!  Just make sure they're 100% human hair - anything less and they're liable to melt on the hot tools.

Do:

-Have fun!!  Having your hair styled can be a wonderful and relaxing experience, so soak it up!  The better prepared you are, and the more confident in your choices, the better the experience will be.

Happy wedding planning!  :)
